Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Joe Cruz relocated to New Jersey to pursue a college education. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in broadcast media and communication studies at Kean University. As an undergraduate student, he worked on numerous projects at the school’s radio station, while also volunteering as director and writer at a community theater group. Cruz earned his master’s in communication and information studies at Rutgers University, where he held a research assistantship studying networked urban communities. While at Rutgers, he worked as a fellow for the Global Communications division at Johnson & Johnson, where he developed digital media projects. He has published and presented about political engagement and technology, comic books and popular culture, and film production in marginalized communities. At Penn State, his research concerns how social media facilitate civic and political engagement amongst diasporic communities. In his spare time, he attends comic book conventions, often dressed up as a particular character. One day he hopes to portray Batman convincingly.
