Dr. Ahmed Alrawi is a lecturer at the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications at Penn State. He earned his Ph.D. in mass communication from the Bellisario College. He also earned his master's degree in media studies and a bachelor's degree in telecommunications from the Bellisario College. Additionally, he earned another bachelor’s degree from the College of Communications at Al-Mansour University in Baghdad, Iraq, where he majored in computer communication engineering.
Alrawi’s research interests are twofold: (1) Surveillance, Privacy, & the Implications of ICTs, and (2) Broadband Platform Policy and Deployment. Hi research focuses on examining the surveillance and privacy implications of ICTs on individuals’ online communication activities. He also examines the policy and deployment of rural broadband connections in the U.S. and MENA countries, specifically in terms of accessibility, affordability, and network availability.
In academia, Alrawi is an active member of AEJMC, ICA, TPRC and PTC. He has presented research related to the telecommunications and media industries at these conferences, among many others. To date, he has given presentations at numerous conferences and published peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals,: including the Journal of information policy, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Mass Communication and Society, Management Communication Quarterly, Surveillance & Society, and Touro Law Review.
Alrawi’s research contributes to understanding the theoretical, methodological, and empirical conversations related to the adoption, use, and effect of ICTs. His research also aims to bring attention to contemporary issues in ICTs, communication, and media sectors to encourage appropriate regulations and policies that benefit the public.
Alrawi teaches the following courses: Introduction to Telecommunications Technologies, Telecommunications Management, Telecommunications Law, Digital Media Metrics, Digital Advertising, and News Writing.
