Gabbie Iorio is a Ph.D. student in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications and a University Graduate Fellow. She graduated cum laude from Barnard College at Columbia University with a bachelor of arts in American Studies with a concentration in media and popular Culture and a minor in psychology. Her undergraduate thesis explored the career of actor/screenwriter Mae West and censorship of women in 1930s Hollywood.
Iorio earned her master's degree in media, culture and communication (MCC) at New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, where she was recognized with the MCC Academic Achievement Award. Her MA thesis highlighted media representations of women in automobile racing.
Iorio's current research focuses on the intersection of sport and gender, celebrity and fandom, and social media and society. She has presented her research on AI and celebrity at the New York State Communication Association Convention, where she earned Top Graduate Paper.
Outside of academia, Iorio has a decade of experience working in social media and influencer marketing and corporate communications for brands including Complex, MTV, Coca-Cola, Marriott International and the agency 160over90 (Part of WME Group). She was born and raised in Michigan.
