Travel & Transit
The residential component of this combined-format Institute will be divided between the Penn State University Park campus located in State College, PA and various sites around Center City, Philadelphia, PA. A chartered bus will transport our group from State College to Philadelphia and back to State College to connect the two cities within the residency.
Participants will arrange their own transportation to arrive in State College for the start of the residency and may choose to depart either (1) from Philadelphia at the residency’s conclusion (recommended) or (2) from State College, following the charter bus's return from Philadelphia.
Arriving by Plane
For participants who will be flying: You have multiple options to consider. We recommend that you (1) book a multi-city itinerary flying into SCE and departing from PHL (the Philadelphia International Airport). You could also (2) book a round-trip flight to SCE (the University Park Airport) or (3) book a round-trip flight to PHL, recognizing that getting to State College from PHL for the start of the Institute will be your responsibility. Additional details about timing your flights and ground transportation will be sent with the letters of acceptance to the institute.
Arriving by Road
Once our participant roster is final, we will open the option to sign up to coordinate ground transportation with others who may be traveling via road to State College.
If you are bringing a vehicle, there are several parking decks available in the immediate vicinity of the Hyatt Place hotel. You can park directly across from the hotel at either the Beaver Avenue Parking Garage or the Fraser Street Parking Garage. If you wish to park directly on the Penn State campus and near our meeting space, you could park in the Nittany Deck.
Ground Transportation
SCE/University Park Airport sits just a quick 15-minute taxi/rideshare trip from the Hyatt Place hotel. On its way out of Philadelphia, the charter bus will also run one trip to PHL/Philadelphia International Airport, if needed, prior to returning to SCE/University Park Airport on the final day of the summer residency.
If multiple participants are interested in flying in-and-out of Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) rather than the University Park Airport (SCE), we may coordinate either a long-distance shuttle bus run (at additional pooled cost to be deducted from stipend payments) or assist in coordinating other options such as a shared rental vehicle. Please do not book any flights until further information is provided after letters of acceptance have been sent.
