Summer Olympics, 2012
Five students from the Curley Center traveled to London to provide coverage of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games for “USADaily” and USOCPressbox. Their stories were distributed to media members, sponsors, members of the U.S. delegation for the Games and representatives from non-governmental bodies. Producing up to five stories per day, the coverage was driven by the following students: Virginia Harrison, graduate student, media studies; Jeffrey Lowe, junior, broadcast journalism; Emily Kaplan, junior, journalism; Christine Newby, senior, broadcast journalism; and, Audrey Snyder, senior, journalism and secondary education/English.
Prior to their coverage of the Games, the Curley Center students gained experience covering the Pan Am Games in October 2011 for the United States Olympic Committee. Both opportunities were made possible by Curley Center in partnership with the USOC, to have students gain exclusive experience and provide supplemental support for USOC writers. “The United States Olympic Committee has provided the Curley Center with a remarkable opportunity,” said Malcolm Moran, the Knight Chair in Sports Journalism and Society and director of the Curley Center at the time. “Our students will have an experience that many professionals have to wait 10 years or more to reach.”
