Understanding Digital Photography

Flash

A flash produces a burst of artificial light to brighten a scene during a photographic exposure. A flash can be set manually, where the photographer adjusts the intensity of the flash, or on an auto setting. Modern cameras use Through The Lens metering (TTL) with electronic flash. Through The Lens metering allows the camera to evaluate the intensity of light passing through the camera's lens as it's reflected from a scene. The flash and camera, together, provide a proper exposure in many situations.
