Biography

John Dillon brings a wealth of varied experience to the Department of Journalism. He previously taught at Virginia Commonwealth University and worked at the Richmond Times-Dispatch in Richmond, Va., where he served as deputy managing editor for metro news and Virginia news. In that role, he was responsible for the direction and performance of 65 reporters and editors covering local and state news. Dillon was awarded the World Affairs Journalism Fellowship in 2002, a nationally competitive program sponsored by the International Center for Journalists and the World Affairs Councils of America. In addition to his professional teaching and editing careers, Dillon has made numerous presentations at many schools on journalism careers and internships. He also served in the U.S. Army. He was based in Stuttgart, Germany from 1970-1973 and served as a platoon leader, battalion staff officer and division-level public affairs officer. Dillon was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant. Dillon received his bachelor of arts degree in journalism from Creighton University in 1969 and his master’s degree in mass communication from the University of Minnesota in 1974.
