Our First-Year Student Community / Living Learning Community

This first-year student community encourages success and supports personal growth by integrating academic, professional and social aspects of college life into one cohesive experience.

Join Communications House and navigate college life in a community that provides mentoring and transition support from other Bellisario College students, staff and faculty. Surround yourself with like-minded peers and fully embrace this engaged living space focused on providing guidance and support through meaningful involvement and development of a strong sense of community.

Goals

The Communications House was developed to serve three primary goals:

1. Give communications students a community of their own.

Communications House allow students interested in Advertising /Public Relations, Journalism, Film Production, Telecommunications and Media Industries, and Media Studies to build a community and develop a sense of belonging. Students will have the chance to participate in social events and collaborative learning all while getting to know other like-minded peers.

2. Help our students succeed

Communications House allow students interested in Advertising /Public Relations, Journalism, Film Production, Telecommunications and Media Industries, and Media Studies to build a community and develop a sense of belonging. Students will have the chance to participate in social events and collaborative learning all while getting to know other like-minded peers.

3. Provide opportunities for engagement

College success is about more than just the classroom experience. Communications House will promote opportunities for students to get involved in student run clubs and organizations specific to students’ creative interests in communications media. This community will foster the development of power skills that will align professional development including, collaborative team dynamics, interview skills, resume building, and more.

Location

The Communications House is located in Brumbaugh Hall within the East Residence Halls complex.

East Halls is a large complex made up of mostly first-year students. This means that Communications House is situated inside of a larger community of first-year students, allows our students to develop a sense of community among communications students as well as the larger first-year student community at Penn State.

How to Request Housing in Communications House

Once you have accepted your offer of admissions to Penn State through your MyPennState account, one of the next steps is to complete your housing contract. The office of student housing will email you step-by-step instructions, so keep an eye on your email.Students will have until noon on May 15th to indicate their housing preferences in the e-living system. In order to be placed in Communications House, students should indicate their preferences as follows:

1. Residence Area Preference Selection:
   1. EAST HALLS
   2. Any room type from the dropdown
   3. You can also request a preferred roommate if you would like by adding their PSU ID
2. Living Learning Community Preference Selection:
   1. LLC: First-Year Communications (first-year only)
