Aynne Kokas, the C.K. Yen Professor at the Miller Center, the director of the University of Virginia East Asia Center, and an associate professor of media studies at the University of Virginia, will discuss her book "Trafficking Data: How China is Winning the Battle for Digital Sovereignty," which examines Sino-U.S. media and technology relations. The session is free and open to the public, sponsored by the Pioneers Chair, the Department of Media Studies and the Center for Global Studies.

A select group of Bellisario College students will cover the Women's World Cup in New Zealand next summer (July 15-Aug. 3) as part of a partnership with The Associated Press. "Beyond the Attention Economy: The Ambivalence of Pets, Memes, and TikTok"

Pockrass Memorial Lecture, Fall 2022: Cute pet and animal images are staples of contemporary digital cultures, but the cultural tenets that inform their creation and circulation can often be wielded for more insidious means. The same social media that give us Grumpy Cat can also give us political hate symbols. By specifically interrogating the role of attention in relation to pet and animal social media, communication scholar Jessica Maddox, an assistant professor at the University of Alabama, will discuss the slippages between the cute and ugly of the contemporary internet. The session is free and open to the public.

Students will focus on networking skills and interacting in diverse professional environments.
