Additionally, the meeting will discuss Penn State’s presence at the federal, state, and local levels of government. Free public lecture and presentation featuring Stephanie Strasburg, a photojournalist with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette covering a wide range of assignments. She is drawn to explore the evolving landscape, economy and sociopolitical conditions of the Rust Belt and is interested in developing new ways for stories to be found and shared in her community. In 2017, Strasburg worked on a long-term project that took a deep dive into lives effected by the opioid epidemic in Pittsburgh’s overdose capital of Carrick. In 2016, her work focused around the political landscape of Trump country. Her freelance clients include The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Reuters, STAT News, Vox.com and USA Today.

A forum focused on the University’s Strategic Plan and one of its thematic priorities, Stewarding Our Planet’s Resources, will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 21, in Heritage Hall, HUB-Robeson Center. The purpose of the forum is to provide updates on Stewarding Our Planet’s Resources as well as seek input on the direction and focus of the priority.

Faculty and staff from all disciplines who have an interest are encouraged to attend. Registration is requested. The forum will also be live streamed.

“Communicating Research to the Public” will be presented at the next Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute Bench to Bedside and Beyond Seminar Series from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12.

In addition to being held in H4504 at Penn State College of Medicine, the session will be streamed to 116 Henderson at University Park and stream online via Zoom.

A panel discussion will be held about how to effectively communicate research and science to the public, highlighting some common traps scientists and research coordinators can fall into with tips to consider. This seminar will cover from recruitment of patients to lay summaries to discussing published research. The panel will feature Matthew Solovey, director of communications, Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute and Scott Gilbert, team lead, media relations and multimedia, Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine.

The Bench to Bedside and Beyond Seminar Series is held to encourage an engaged translational science workforce while promoting a culture of continuous improvement in research conduct and practice at Penn State.

Free public screening of "Sadie," with a question-and-answer session with director/writer Megan Griffiths afterward. Session presented by the Department of Film-Video and Media Studies.

Special book-launch event to celebrate the book "Guerrilla Marketing: Counterinsurgency and Capitalism in Colombia," written by Alex Fattal, an assistant professor in the Department of Film-Video and Media Studies. The 304-page book details the Colombian government's efforts to transform Marxist guerrilla fighters in the FARC into consumer citizens. The event will feature a reading by Fattal, as well as commentary from Alex Dent of George Washington University and music from Adianez Martinez. The event is free and open to the public.

The Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment has announced that Katharine Hayhoe will be the keynote speaker for the 2018 Colloquium on the Environment. Hayhoe is an atmospheric scientist studying climate change and its impacts on human systems and the natural environment.

The event will take place at 4:30 on Thursday, Nov. 15, in Schwab Auditorium and is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the colloquium at 6 p.m. in Heritage Hall in the HUB-Robeson Center. Registration is requested.

Free public screening: Directed by Stephen Loveridge, the film is drawn from a never-before-seen cache of personal footage spanning decades, painting an intimate portrait of the Sri Lankan artist and musician known as M.I.A. The documentary explores her negotiation of her role as an artist and celebrity through the lens of Tamil politics and migration to the West. Post-screening panel discussion features: Suresh Canagarajah, a faculty member in the Department of Applied Linguistics and English and director of the Migration Studies Project; Joe Duman, an associate teaching professor in the Department of Film-Video and Media Studies; and Pearl Gluck, a filmmaker and assistant professor in the Department of Film-Video and Media Studies.

The 2018 McDowell Lecture will be given by Dr. Donald Siegel, Emeritus Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professor, Department Earth Sciences, Syracuse University, presenting, "The Dismissal of Scientific Facts by America's Citizens: Root Causes and a Way to Renew Meaningful Communication." Dr. Siegel stresses; "Social tribalism and a fragmented media encourage the public to reject established scientific facts on environmental, agricultural, and health problems." He will offer his personal experience on how to better initiate meaningful science communication. This lecture should be of special interest to all Educators and Extension Faculty.

The McDowell Lecture Series is named in honor of Milton "Mickey" S. McDowell, Class of 1892 and first director of Pennsylvania Cooperative Extension (1912-1942). The series provides opportunities to address issues that face Extension in the 21st century, to examine ideas which are not necessarily endorsed by the administration, and to provide an opportunity for recognized leaders in the field to address Extension issues. This year's lecture will be presented live at the Pennsylvania Joint Council of Extension Professionals (PA JCEP) annual meeting, AND as a webinar for all Extension faculty and staff across the state.
