Guest Lecture: Steven Rich

Journalism-focused guest lecture by Pulitzer Prize-winner Steven Rich, database editor for the investigations unit at The Washington Post. He has worked on investigations across virtually every beat at The Post, including stories on civil forfeiture, college athletics, the National Security Agency, policing, and school shootings. His work has been part of two Pulitzer Prize-winning efforts (national reporting, 2016; public service, 2014) and he has also earned a Peabody Award (2017), and two Polk Awards (2016, 2015) in the past four years. His work has also been honored by the Associated Press Sports Editors and the American Society of News Editors, among others. He is a member of the board of directors for Investigative Reporters and Editors. The session is free and open to the public.

SciComm Speaker Series: Sharon Dunwoody

Dr. Sharon Dunwoody is an expert on the public understanding of science, particularly the role of science, environment and health messages in mass media. She is a professor emeritus of journalism and mass communication at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. The research areas she focuses on include science literacy, risk communication, scientist-journalist interactions and environmental communication. Her talk -- titled "Social Norms as Behavioral Catalysts for Science and Environmental Issues" -- is free and open to the public. Dunwoody is a professor of journalism and mass communication at the University of Wisconsin.

Engaging the Community in Research

“Engaging the Community in Research” will be presented at the next Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute Bench to Bedside and Beyond Seminar Series from noon to 1 p.m. on Sept. 24. This seminar will be held in H4504 at Penn State College of Medicine, streamed to 116 Henderson at University Park, and streamed online via Zoom.

A panel will discuss community-engaged research, resources available through the Community-Engaged Research Core, the core’s faculty fellowship program and the value of Community Engagement Studios. The panel will feature Dr. Jennifer Kraschnewski, co-director of the institute’s Community-Engaged Research Core, Gina Brelsford, 2017-18 Community-Engaged Research Fellow, and Dr. Deepa Sekhar, 2018-19 Community-Engaged Research Fellow.
The Bench to Bedside and Beyond Seminar Series is held to encourage an engaged translational science workforce while promoting a culture of continuous improvement in research conduct and practice at Penn State.
