Acquisitions Editorial Assistant

Penn State University Press seeks a bright and energetic candidate for the position of Acquisitions Editorial Assistant (Technical Communications Specialist 2). This position provides general departmental support for the Editor-in-Chief, as well as support for three acquisitions editors who acquire 45-50 new books per year.
Responsibilities include:
Screening manuscripts and proposals
Processing submitted manuscripts and coordinating the peer review of manuscripts under formal consideration
Maintaining and updating departmental databases
Drafting book descriptions for project proposals
Requesting cost estimates from production and preparing provisional book budgets
Preparing accepted manuscripts for transmittal into production
Assisting editors with grant applications
Maintaining regular contact via e-mail or telephone with authors and peer reviewers
Assisting the Editor-in-Chief with foreign rights deals
Taking minutes at departmental meetings
Basic filing and photocopying.
This is a demanding but exciting job at a press with a wide range of publications from monographs to general interest titles in a variety of subject areas. For more information about the Press, see www.psupress.org.
Typically requires a Bachelor's degree plus two years of work-related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
We need an efficient, detail-oriented individual who is able to prioritize work and function independently in a fast-paced environment. Teamwork is very important. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and good organizational abilities are essential; experience with Macintosh computers is preferred.
Must possess ability to interact effectively with individuals from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Excellent training for any career path in publishing. The University Libraries is a multicultural environment that embraces respect and diversity.
