Job description

Sports Business Journal is globally recognized as the leading news and network source for thousands of sports business professionals. The Research Assistant conducts extensive desk research around key sports sectors, such as sponsorships, attendance, construction, facility naming rights, college athletic directors, executive biographies/timelines, RFPs, state-produced sports betting reports, and other intel. The position also requires mining data from multiple SBJ research partners, including but not limited to iSpot.TV, Marketcast, Nielsen, Civic Science, Placer.ai, YouGov, PlayEasy, Hive, Zoomph and others. We are looking for a behind-the-scenes grinder, someone who loves to just dig for data and present it in a user-friendly, illustrative way.

Required Skills

· A strong knowledge of sports and an interest in the business side of sports, pop culture and current events.

· An aptitude for desk research, with an ability to manage time effectively and be task-oriented and detail-oriented.

· Comfortable searching for data and research and presenting it to editors for inclusion.

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel, and/or Google Workspace applications required.

· Exceptional organization and communication skills and attention to detail – our industry demands accuracy.

· Must be a self-starter while working well in a team environment, and be comfortable in a high-pressure, fast-paced newsroom setting.

· Must be flexible in job responsibilities and willing to accept and apply constructive criticism.

· Ability to interact in a professional manner with top sports business executives and data partners in person, online or on the phone.

Job Responsibilities

· Produce data files and copy on deadline that are clear and concise and turn complicated subjects and issues into readable stories, charts and graphics.

· Consistently pitch original story ideas.

· Adhere to deadlines and be able to juggle multiple projects on differing timelines.

· Be involved in compilation of audience for television / streaming.

· Flexibility is crucial. For example, in a given week, the ideal candidate would be able to multitask such as keeping the Olympic medal count, attendance for MLB pennant races, search legal filings and search municipal documents such as stadium financing.

Qualifications

· Bachelor's (Preferred)

· Data mining: 1 year (Preferred)
