Joe Cruz earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast media and communication studies at Kean University, with a focus in video production. As an undergraduate student, he founded a community theater company for high school students, where he also volunteered as writer and director.
Cruz obtained a master’s degree in communication and information studies at Rutgers University, where he held a research assistantship studying networked urban communities. While at Rutgers, Cruz became a fellow at Johnson & Johnson’s global communications division, where he worked developing digital media projects.
He has published and presented about political engagement and technology, comic books and political discourse, and video production in diasporic communities. At Penn State, his scholarship investigates social media’s role on civic and political engagement, and their eventual impact on democracy. In his spare time, Cruz plays tennis, attends comic book conventions, and scouts around for indie film festivals.
